Kerry is a county in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland, out on the Atlantic. People go there for mountains, lakes, and a wild green coast; the Ring of Kerry, a long scenic drive, is the name many tourists already know. You will also hear of Killarney and of Tralee. Though actually, Kerry is also a first name and a family name in English, so the same spelling can mean a person. This entry is the place. People from Kerry are sometimes called Kerry people (or, in older talk, Kerrymen), and they have a friendly reputation in Ireland for being good — that is a stereotype, not a fact you must swallow. The land is wet and green, with sheep on the hills, and Irish is still heard in parts of the county. It has nothing to do with Kenya, even if the two names can look a little alike on a tired evening.
組成As an English surname, from a personal name linked to Old Norse Kári. As an Irish surname, from Ó Ciardha, “descendant of Ciardha,” from ciar, “black.” The county carries the Irish name; do not flatten the place into the Norse surname story.
