Kensington is a borough in west London, just north of the River Thames, famous as a place where rich and fashionable people live. The full official name is the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, but in everyday speech Kensington often means this well-off slice of the city: big old houses, expensive shops, and park land. Kensington Palace is here, and so are Kensington Gardens. South Kensington is the museum corner (the Natural History Museum and its neighbours), and people that to South Ken. The word sounds in British English; newspapers use it as shorthand for wealth. Though actually, not every street is a palace — there are ordinary flats too — but the name still carries that 'expensive west London' feeling. It is a place-name, used like a proper noun, not a common describing word.
組成From the Old English personal name Cynesige plus -ing- ('people associated with') plus -ton ('farm, estate, settlement'): roughly 'the estate of Cynesige's people'. A town in Prince Edward Island, Canada, was later named after this London borough.
