A keffiyeh is a square cloth traditionally worn on the head (and sometimes the shoulders) by Arab men, often folded into a triangle and held with a cord. Many are woven in a check pattern: black and white, or red and white. It keeps off sun, dust, and wind, so it is practical clothing, not a costume. In recent decades the black-and-white keffiyeh has also become a strong political symbol, especially tied to Palestinian identity, and you will see it worn around the neck as a scarf far from the Middle East. Spellings vary (keffiyeh, kaffiyeh, kufiya). It is not a : a is wound cloth; a keffiyeh is a draped square. In English it is a borrowed cultural word, used in news and everyday talk when people mean this specific headcloth.
