Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal, in a valley of the . It is the country’s largest city and the place most visitors fly into before they go on to the mountains. It is crowded and busy, with old temples and palaces beside traffic, markets, and government buildings. English sometimes treats Kathmandu as a far-off, dreamy name; though actually it is a working capital, with schools, offices, and ordinary daily life at high altitude. Older books may spell it Katmandu — same city. Nepal is the country; Kathmandu is the city. It is not in India, though India is next door.

組成From Nepali काठमाडौं (kāṭhmāḍaũ), from Sanskrit काष्ठमण्डप (kāṣṭhamaṇḍapa): काष्ठ (kāṣṭha, “wood”) + मण्डप (maṇḍapa, “pavilion, an open hall”). The old name was a wooden pavilion.
