Kashmiri is not the name of the place — the place is Kashmir. Kashmiri means “of Kashmir”: a Kashmiri person, Kashmiri food, a Kashmiri shawl. As a noun it is a person from Kashmir, or the language spoken there. You will hear it in the news for Kashmiri separatists, meaning people from that region who want their own country. The ending -i is a common way, in names from that part of Asia, to turn a land into “someone or something from there” (as Pakistani is from Pakistan). Because the land is split, a Kashmiri family may live on the Indian side, the Pakistani side, or overseas. Do not use Kashmiri when you mean the map region itself.
