Karnak is a village in Egypt, on the Nile near Luxor, in the land of the old Egyptian kings. When English speakers say Karnak, they almost always mean the enormous temple ground there — stone halls, tall gates, rows of statues, and columns as thick as trees — built and rebuilt by pharaohs over many hundreds of years, above all for the god Amon (you will also see Amun). It is one of the largest holy places left from that world, and a major stop on trips to Egypt’s old temples. The village name and the temple name have become the same word in English. It is not Cairo; Cairo is the big capital much further down the river.
