Kapok is a very light, fluffy fibre, a bit like cotton but silkier and full of air. People stuff it into soft things: cushions, pillows, old life jackets, stuffed toys. It comes from the seed pods of the kapok tree (the silk-cotton tree), not from a cotton field. Though actually, it is a slightly old-fashioned filling now. Many new cushions use foam or instead, so you may meet kapok in older houses, in craft talk, or when someone wants a filling that is natural and very light. It is a thing-word, not a fancy or scientific word in everyday English. If a jacket “filled with kapok” is in a story, the point is usually that it floats or that it is soft and light.
