Kampuchea is an old English name for Cambodia, the country in Southeast Asia between Thailand, , and Vietnam. It is not a different place. Though actually, the name is not a quiet old spelling: English used it most in the 1970s, when a communist group called the Khmer Rouge ran the country. Their leader was Pot. From 1975 to 1979 they killed millions of Cambodian people. So Kampuchea often carries that dark time with it. A news story or history book that says Kampuchea is often pointing to the Pot years, not to the country as people live in it today. In ordinary talk now, almost everyone says Cambodia. You will still meet Kampuchea in older writing, in talk about the Khmer Rouge, and in the official English name from that time, Democratic Kampuchea.

    柬埔寨(舊稱)。尤其讓人想到赤柬、波布執政那幾年;現在一般就說柬埔寨。
