Kampala is the capital city of Uganda, in East Africa, not far from Lake Victoria. It is Uganda’s main city: government, business, and a large share of the country’s public life sit there. The city is spread over a group of hills, which you will hear in travel writing and in how people describe getting across town. English uses Kampala as a place name with a capital K; “in Kampala” means in that city, and “Kampala” in a news story is often shorthand for Uganda’s government, the way people say “” for decisions made there. The name comes from a Bantu language; the exact story of the name is not settled.
