In Hindu belief, Kali is a goddess linked with time, death, and destruction. Pictures often show her with dark skin, many arms, a string of heads, and her tongue out; she may stand on the god Shiva. That fierce look is the part Western films and Halloween costumes copy, and it is only half the story. For many believers she is also a mother who destroys what is evil and protects her people — the ending of things so that something else can live. English speakers usually treat Kali as a proper name and keep the capital K. Pop culture that uses her only as a “scary death goddess” is borrowing the picture and leaving the faith behind. This entry is the goddess, not a stick-fighting art and not a chemistry word that happens to look the same on the page.
組成From Sanskrit Kālī, the feminine form related to kāla (“black,” and also “time”). The name is the goddess’s name, not an English compound.
