A kaffeeklatch is a loose, friendly get-together where people drink coffee and talk. It is not a meeting with a plan or a chairperson — the talk is the point, and the coffee is just what sits on the table while it happens. The word was borrowed from German, and in English it still feels a little foreign and a little old-fashioned: you will meet it more in writing, or from older speakers, than in young everyday chat. Older English use often pictured women spending an afternoon talking over coffee, sometimes with a hint of gossip; now it can be any informal coffee-and-talk gathering, mixed or not. People also spell it kaffeeklatsch, which is closer to the German. Either way, it names the social situation, not a special kind of coffee.
