K2 is a huge mountain, the second highest on Earth after Mount . It stands in the Karakoram range, on the border between Kashmir and China. The name is not an old local name. In 1856 a British , Thomas Montgomerie, looked out from Mount Harmukh and numbered the big peaks he could see in that range; this was the second, so he wrote K2 — K for the Karakoram. The label stuck, and that is how the world still says it. treat it as even fiercer than : colder, steeper, and harder to survive, which is why some call it the Savage Mountain. Though actually, “second highest” does not mean “the easy one after .” Height is only one kind of difficulty.
