K2 is a huge mountain, the second highest on Earth after Mount Everest. It stands in the Karakoram range, on the border between Kashmir and China.

The name is not an old local name. In 1856 a British surveyor, Thomas Montgomerie, looked out from Mount Harmukh and numbered the big peaks he could see in that range; this was the second, so he wrote K2 — K for the Karakoram. The label stuck, and that is how the world still says it.
