In the old Roman stories, Juno is the goddess of women and of marriage. She is the wife of Jupiter, the king of those gods, so people also think of her as a queen in the sky. She is powerful, proud, and often angry when she is not given respect. The Greeks told almost the same story, but they called her Hera. English still uses Juno when the story is Roman — in poems, in art, and in names of ships and spacecraft. Though actually, this is a name from myth, not a word you use for a real woman in the street. When people say someone is “like Juno,” they usually mean she looks grand and queenly, not that she is kind.
