Junkers is a name for German military aircraft designed by Hugo Junkers (1859–1935) and used by the German air force in World War I and World War II. His company was an early maker of all-metal planes. Famous types include the Ju 87 “Stuka” dive-bomber and the Ju 88. In German the name sounds more like YOONG-kers; many English speakers say it like “junk-ers.” These are not “junk” planes — Junkers is a man’s surname, written with a capital J. You meet the word in history, museums, and war stories.
