Jungian means “about Carl Jung, or following his ideas about the mind.” Jung (1875–1961) was a Swiss doctor who cared a lot about dreams, stories, and religion, not only about illness. He grouped people as introverts (who turn inward) and extraverts (who turn outward); everyday English often spells that second word extrovert. He also spoke of the collective unconscious: the idea that our feelings and reactions often rest on very old, shared memories of human life. He worked with Sigmund Freud until they had a serious break. A Jungian therapist works in Jung’s way; a Jungian reading of a dream looks for those deep patterns. It is a specialist word, mostly in psychology and in talk about books and films.
