Juneau is the capital city of Alaska, a US state far in the north. It sits between mountains and the sea. You cannot drive there from the rest of the United States; people fly or take a boat. Though actually it is not Alaska’s biggest city — Anchorage is larger — but the state government works in Juneau. English speakers say JOO-noh, not “June-ow.” The city was named after Joe Juneau, a gold miner; his French family name comes from jeune, “young.”
