A jubilee is a special date people mark because a round number of years has passed since something important began — most often 25 years (a silver jubilee), 50 (a golden jubilee), or 60 (a diamond jubilee). Kings and queens, churches, schools, and companies hold them. It is not just any party, and not an ordinary birthday.

組成From Hebrew yōḇēl, “ram; a trumpet made from a ram’s horn; the jubilee year,” because a ram’s-horn trumpet was blown to proclaim it (see Leviticus 25:9). It passed through Greek and Late Latin, then French, into English. Latin words for a cry of joy later coloured the spelling, but the core is the Hebrew horn-and-holy-year word.
