Your jowl is the soft skin and flesh along the lower jaw, on each side of the face. People usually say it when that flesh is heavy or hangs a little — heavy jowls — or when they talk about a dog whose cheeks swing as it runs. It is not the jawbone. The jaw is the bone; the jowl is the meat and skin on it. Though actually some speakers use it a bit loosely for the whole lower face, and English also kept the old phrase cheek by jowl, meaning packed in very close, side by side. That phrase kept the word alive even for people who never talk about faces.

組成Does not split in modern English. From Old English ċeafl (jaw, cheek). The form we might have expected is more like chawl; the modern spelling was pulled toward jaw, which it partly shares a history with.
