Joss is an old word, borrowed from Chinese religious tradition through Portuguese and English sailors long ago, referring to a Chinese god, idol, or object of worship. Today it survives mainly in the phrase 'joss stick' - the thin sticks of incense burned in temples and homes to honor gods or . On its own, 'joss' is rarely used now outside that one phrase.
