In the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament, the man who took over from Moses and led the into , the land they had been promised. The book that tells his story is called the Book of Joshua. The most famous part is the taking of the city of : his army walked around the city walls for seven days, then blew their horns and shouted, and the walls fell down. Because of that story, 'the walls of ' and the old song 'Joshua Fit the Battle of ' are widely known even to people who have never opened a Bible. Joshua is also a very ordinary boy's name in English-speaking countries today — it was one of the most popular names for boys in Britain, the United States and Australia in the 1990s and 2000s — usually to Josh. And in the American southwest there is a tree named after him, the Joshua tree, said to have got its name because its raised branches reminded of Joshua lifting his arms in prayer; U2's album The Joshua Tree made the name famous far beyond the desert.
組成From Hebrew Yehoshua, understood as 'Yahweh is salvation' — the name of God joined to a word for saving. When Hebrew scripture was translated into Greek, this name and its shorter form Yeshua were both written as Iēsous, which came into English as Jesus. So Joshua and Jesus are, at root, the same name arriving in English by two different roads.
