    The jitterbug is a fast, bouncy jazz dance that was wildly popular in the 1930s and 1940s, especially in the United States. Dancers swing, spin, and kick; it sits close to swing dancing, and people sometimes use the names in a loose way. A person who danced it could also be called a jitterbug. There is a verb too: to jitterbug is to dance like that. The name is jitter (shaky, movement) plus bug (here, a person who is “crazy about” something), after Cab Calloway's 1934 song “Jitter Bug.” Though actually, you will mostly meet the word in history, old films, and dance classes now — it is not what young people call a night out.
