A jilbab is a long, loose piece of clothing with long sleeves that some Muslim women wear as an outer covering over their other clothes. It usually covers the body from the shoulders down, often to the feet, and is meant to be modest — it hides the shape of the body rather than showing it. It is not the same as a hijab, which is mainly a headscarf, though a woman may wear both. It is also not a burqa, which covers the face as well. Styles differ by country and by family custom. Though actually, in Indonesia and Malaysia, jilbab often means the headscarf itself, which is the opposite of how many English and Arabic speakers use it — so the same word does not point to the same piece of cloth everywhere. In English you will mostly meet it in news or writing about dress and Muslim life, not in casual chat unless you are among people who wear them.
