    Jetsam is cargo thrown from a ship on purpose — often to make the ship lighter in a storm — that then floats and may wash toward the shore. The old pair is flotsam and jetsam. Though actually they are not the same: flotsam is stuff that floats off a wreck by accident; jetsam was thrown. In everyday talk the pair into leftover bits and pieces, or even people a society has 'thrown away.' That second use is sadder and less exact. The sea meaning is the original one. You will meet the word more in writing and news about beaches than in chat.
