A Jesuit is a man who belongs to the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic order begun in the 1500s. Jesuits are priests and brothers, known for schools, study, and mission work in many countries. In Taiwan, students often meet the name through Catholic schools and churches linked to that order. Write it with a capital J: it is a group name. Not every Catholic priest is a Jesuit — only a member of this society. Though actually, older English sometimes used Jesuit in an unkind way, to mean a crafty talker. That use is dated and unfair to the real order. For learners, the first meaning is the religious one: a man of that Catholic society.
