If you say something jestingly, you are not being fully serious. You say it to people, or to wrap a hard point in a smile. The sentence may look like a real claim, but the speaker does not mean it straight — or means it only as a joke. It is a slightly old, adverb. Most people today would just say jokingly. You will still meet jestingly in stories and in careful writing. Though actually, “not really meaning it” here is about play, not about lying to hurt someone: the aim is to , or to , not to trick.
