Jericho is a very old city north of the Dead Sea. Learner books sometimes file it as a city in Israel. Though actually, it sits in the West Bank, and people still live there now. Many writers call it the oldest city in the world, or one of the oldest: people have built and rebuilt on that spot for thousands of years. In the Old Testament, Joshua leads the Israelites against Jericho. They shout and blow trumpets, and the walls fall down. English still borrows that picture: when something strong suddenly gives way, people may talk about the walls of Jericho. In 1967 Israel took the city from Jordan; in 1994 it became part of the Palestinian Authority. You will meet the name in church, in history class, and in the news. Write it with a capital J: it is a place, not a common noun.
