    A jemmy is a short, strong metal bar, a little bent at one end, used to force open a locked door, a window, or a crate. In stories and crime news it is the thief's tool — though actually locksmiths and movers use the same kind of bar; they just do not call it a jemmy. The word is mainly British. Americans say jimmy for the same short bar, or crowbar for a longer one. You can also use it as a verb: to jemmy a door is to break it open with that bar. It sounds slightly old-fashioned and a bit like a crime story, not like everyday talk about tools in a shop.
