A jeep is a small, tough car made to go where ordinary cars struggle: mud, stones, farm tracks, army ground. The first ones were built for the US army in the Second World War. The name comes from GP, short for “general purpose” — a vehicle for many jobs, not one fancy job. Jeep is also a brand, so in careful writing the car company wants a capital J. Though actually, in everyday talk people often say jeep for any little four-wheel-drive car that looks like one, even if it is not that brand. It can be a noun (“We took a jeep”) and, more loosely, people talk about jeep tracks or a jeep ride. It is informal, practical language, not a word.
組成From GP, which stood for “general purpose.” The army vehicle was a general-purpose vehicle; the letters GP were read aloud and became Jeep.
