Jaywalkingjaywalking is the act of walking across a road指的是在危險或違規的情況下穿越馬路的行為 where it is dangerous or against the rules, for example mid-block, or against the light比如在路段中間穿越,或闖紅燈穿越。 In American English在美式英文裡, it is the normal noun for that act這是這個行為常用的名詞, and in some US cities而在美國有些城市, it is written into the law這還被寫進法律裡。
British English understands it, but it still sounds a bit American. Though actually, the idea that 'the street is for cars, and walkers must stay in their box' is newer than people think; the word was pushed hard in the early days of cars.
British English英式英文 understands it聽得懂這個字, but it still sounds a bit American但聽起來還是有點美式。 Though actually不過實際上, the idea that 'the street is for cars, and walkers must stay in their box'「馬路是給車子的,行人得待在自己的格子裡」這種想法 is newer than people think其實比大家以為的還要新; the word was pushed hard in the early days of cars這個字是在汽車剛出現的年代被大力推廣的。
In everyday talk it can also be the -ing form of the verb: she was jaywalking. Taiwan has rules about crossing too, but students here more often hear 闖紅燈 or 不走斑馬線 than this English noun.
In everyday talk在日常對話裡, it can also be the -ing form of the verb它也可以是動詞的-ing形式: she was jaywalking她was jaywalking(她當時在違規穿越馬路)。 Taiwan台灣 has rules about crossing too對穿越馬路也有規定, but students here more often hear不過這裡的學生更常聽到的是 闖紅燈 or 不走斑馬線闖紅燈或不走斑馬線 than this English noun而不是這個英文名詞。
組成Cut back from jaywalker, then heard as jaywalk + -ing, or as jay (a foolish person) + walking. As a verb form, it is jaywalk + -ing.
