    In informal American English, java means coffee — a cup of java, a java break. It is friendly diner-and-office slang, not the careful word a coffee shop would put on a menu. The name comes from the island of Java, which grew a lot of the coffee people drank from about 1850 on; saying java was a bit like using the place for the drink. Though actually, in Taiwan most students meet Java first as the programming language. That language was named after this coffee (it was first called Oak), so the computer word is a joke about programmers and caffeine. This entry is the drink.

組成Borrowed from Javanese Jawa, via Franco-Italian and Latin, possibly from Sanskrit yava-dvīpa (“island of barley”). Used for coffee grown on Java and nearby islands since at least 1850. The programming language (first called Oak) was named after this coffee.
