Jaundice is when a person's skin, and the white part of the eyes, turn yellow. It is not a colour anyone chooses. It is a sign that the body is not clearing a yellow waste in the blood, often because the liver is in trouble, or a tube from the liver is blocked — or, in a new baby, because the liver is still waking up. Doctors often look at the eyes first; yellow there is hard to miss. Though actually, people also talk about a jaundiced view: a bitter, way of looking at things, as if old hurt had stained the mind the way the illness stains the skin. That use is a picture; they do not mean the person is ill.
組成From Middle English jaundis, jaunis, from Middle French jaunisse: jaune (“yellow”) + -isse (“-ness”), so “yellowness.” Jaune came from Old French jalne, from Latin galbinus (“yellowish”), from galbus (“yellow”).
