Jasper is a stone, often red, yellow, or brown, sometimes with a little green. It can look cloudy or striped, as if paint was stirred and never quite mixed. People have long made beads, stamps, and small ornaments from it. Though actually, it is not a high-value gem like a diamond or a ruby — shops put it with the common, cheaper stones. Many students meet Jasper first as a man's name; the name and the stone travelled the same old path into English.

組成From Middle English jasper, jaspre, from Old French jaspre, a variant of jaspe (modern French jaspe), from Latin iaspis, from Ancient Greek ἴασπις (íaspis).
