A janitor is the person whose job is to look after a school or another large building: unlocking doors, cleaning, taking out rubbish, doing small repairs, and knowing where everything is. In American and Canadian English this is the usual word, especially at schools. In Britain people more often say caretaker or cleaner, depending on the work. The word comes from Latin ianitor, a doorkeeper. Though actually, a janitor today is not only standing at a door; the old “keeper of the door” grew into “keeper of the whole building.” It is a job-title word, neither rude nor fancy.
