Jamestown is a town in Virginia, in the United States. In 1607 English people built a settlement there — the first town they managed to keep going in North America. It is named after King James I of England. Life was brutally hard at the start; many people died in the early years. The town later grew, then when Virginia’s capital moved, and today it is mainly a historic place that tourists and school groups visit. When English textbooks say Jamestown, they almost always mean this Virginia town, though actually other places in the world share the name.
