Jamesian means “like Henry James,” or about his books and his way of writing. Henry James (1843–1916) was an American novelist who lived for many years in Europe. He is known for stories about what Europe did to Americans who travelled there — money, manners, love, and the quiet ways people hide what they feel. Famous books include Washington Square, The Portrait of a Lady, and the ghost story The Turn of the Screw. A Jamesian sentence is often long and careful; a Jamesian story watches thought more than fights. It is a word for teachers, , and literature students, not for chat. Though actually, some writers also use Jamesian for the philosopher William James, Henry’s ; if the talk is about novels, they mean Henry.
