A jamboree is a big, noisy gathering — a party, a festival, a crowd having a loud good time. The word began as American slang in the 1800s; nobody knows where it came from. Though actually, many meet it first in Scouts: in 1919 Baden-Powell chose jamboree as the name for a huge Scout meeting, and that use is still very much alive (the World Scout Jamboree). As a party word it is informal, and in newspapers it can sound a little old or (“a media jamboree” means a noisy show around an event). As a Scout word it is official.
