Jamaica is an island country in the Caribbean Sea. Its capital is Kingston. It is an independent state and a member of the British Commonwealth. English is the official language, though everyday speech is often Jamaican . From the 1600s to the 1800s, many people were taken from Africa and forced to work on sugar and banana farms there. Today people know Jamaica as a beautiful place to visit, and as the home of music and the Rastafari religion. The name comes from a Taíno word, Xaymaca, often explained as “land of wood and water”; maca in Taíno is linked to “wood.”
