A jalapeño is a small, hot green pepper used a lot in Mexican food. You often see it sliced on nachos, in salsa, or pickled in a jar. It is hot enough to make your mouth burn, though it is not the hottest pepper in the world — cooks use it when they want a kick, not a fire. If it stays on the plant longer, it can turn red, but the green one is the one most people picture. The word is Spanish. In English we often keep the mark over the n (ñ), which tells you to say a ny sound: ha-la-PEN-yo. In casual writing people sometimes drop the mark and write jalapeno, but the sound stays the same.
