    A Jain is a person who follows , an old religion from India. You can also put Jain in front of a noun: Jain teaching, a Jain temple. It is a proper word, so it takes a capital J. It is not the English name Jane, though in many accents it sounds the same. English borrowed it from jaina, tied to jina, “the one who has conquered” — in this tradition, conquered inner enemies such as greed and harm — from a root meaning to conquer. Jains are a community you will meet in India and in the Indian diaspora; speaking of “a Jain” is speaking of a person, not of the whole religion.
