A jaguar is a large wild cat from South America (and parts of Central America). Its fur is brown to gold with black spots, often rings with a smaller mark inside — close to a leopard’s coat, which is why people mix the two up, though they live in different parts of the world. It is a strong hunter, at home in forest and near water, and it can swim. In English class the word is the animal. A car company later borrowed the name; that is a different use. The English word came through Portuguese from an Old Tupi name for the cat, îagûara.
