A Jacobite was someone in the 17th or 18th century who supported King James II of England (James VII of Scotland) and wanted him, or one of his , to rule after he was pushed off the throne in 1688. They rose in arms more than once, especially in Scotland. The name is Latin Jācōbus — James — plus -ite, “a follower,” so it is equivalent to Jacob + -ite. It is a history word, not a word for someone named Jacob today. Though actually, English has a nearby trap: a Jacobin is a different person entirely, from the French Revolution. And , which looks like a cousin, is the style and period of James I, a different king, about a century earlier. Keep those three on separate shelves.
