Ivanhoe is the hero of a novel published in 1819 by Sir Walter Scott, also called Ivanhoe. The story is set in England in the 1100s, after the Norman Conquest, with knights, tournaments, and a lot of honour and trouble. Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe is a brave Saxon knight who comes home from the Crusades and walks into fights over land, love, and who should be king. He is not a real man from history; Scott made him up, though the book feels packed with real-looking medieval life. The book was hugely famous, so the name still turns up as shorthand for that romantic knight-in-armour world.
