1. 1

An IV is the drip that puts liquid straight into a vein, so it goes into the blood at once. In a hospital you see a bag hanging on a stand, a thin tube, and a needle or a small plastic tube in the arm. The liquid might be water and salts when someone cannot drink, medicine, blood, or food for the vein. IV is short for : inside the veins. Nurses say “put in an IV” or “she’s on an IV.” In everyday English, people also know IV as the Roman number 4 — same letters, completely different job. This entry is the hospital one.
