An isthmus is a thin strip of land with water on both sides, joining two bigger pieces of land. Think of a narrow bridge of earth, not a bridge people built. The famous one many textbooks name is the Isthmus of Panama, which joins North and South America and has a canal cut through it. Another is the Isthmus of Corinth in Greece. It is a geography word, a little formal, but once you have the picture it is simple. It is not an island (water all round) and not a peninsula (land with water on three sides, still joined by a wider end). The isthmus is the neck.
