Istanbul is the biggest city in Turkey, and a great port. It sits in the north-west, right where Europe meets Asia, with water running through the middle. Ships, bridges, and a huge old city are the picture people have. It is not the capital — that is , inland. The name on the map has changed with power: the Greeks knew it as ; from 330 AD until 1923 it was , the capital of the Eastern Roman / Byzantine world, and then of the Ottomans. After the Turkish republic, Istanbul became the official name. People still say in history class. In travel talk, Istanbul is the city you fly to.
組成From Turkish İstanbul, from Ottoman Turkish. Local Greeks used to say εἰς τὴν Πόλιν — “to the City” — because Constantinople was the city, and that phrase was worn down into İstanbul.
