Isometrics are exercises that make a muscle work hard without moving the body part. You push, pull, or hold, and the muscle stays the same length: a plank, sitting against a wall as if a chair were there, or pressing your palms together as hard as you can. The muscle still gets stronger because it is working; you are just not lifting or lowering anything. Gym teachers and people who help bodies use the word. Everyday talk is more often hold, plank, or squeeze. Though actually, the dictionary picture pushing against each other is only one kind — palms together. Pushing against a wall, the floor, or your own weight counts too. The word is nearly always plural: people do isometrics or isometric exercises. It is not the same as moving a weight, and it is not the drink word you see on sports bottles.
