An ism is a set of ideas or beliefs, especially one whose name ends in -ism — socialism, feminism, capitalism, and so on. When people say “an ism” or “all these isms,” they often sound tired or , as if the idea is a club, a slogan, or not practical. You would not usually praise your own beliefs by calling them “my ism.” The word lets a speaker stand back from the system and treat it as a thing, sometimes to study it, more often to roll their eyes at it. It became common in the 1800s, when many social movements had -ism names.
主義(多帶點不以為然,指那些以 -ism 結尾的思想體系)
組成The suffix -ism (“belief / system”) used as a word on its own, especially from the 19th century for social movements. English has done the same trick with a few other endings (phobia from -phobia, and, more loosely, itis from -itis).
