Islay is an island off the west coast of Scotland, one of the Inner . Visitors go for the coast and the small towns, but the name is famous for whisky: there are many , and “Islay whisky” often means a strong, smoky kind. In English the name is usually said like EYE-luh, not ISS-lay; the s is silent. That s is a spelling extra. The old name is Ìle, and people later linked the look of the word with isle, the same kind of mix-up that put an s into island.

組成From Scottish Gaelic Ìle. The name is probably older than Gaelic, from a language we cannot pin down, like some other Scottish island names (Skye, Lewis, Arran). A writer in 1926 guessed at a Celtic root to do with a flank or with fermenting, but that is only a hint. The silent s comes from linking the name with isle, not from the original name.
