Isis is the most important goddess in the old religion of Egypt. Stories call her a goddess of nature, of magic, and of mothers. She was the wife of , and also his sister — that pairing belongs to the old Egyptian god-family pattern, not to a modern family story. Their son is Horus. In the famous tale, is killed; Isis searches for him, brings him back, and their son is born. Later, people far outside Egypt also worshipped her. In a museum or a history class, Isis is this goddess. Though actually, news English since the 2010s often uses the same letters in capitals — ISIS — for a violent political group. That group’s name is a set of English initials, not the goddess’s name, but on a page they can look the same if the capitals are lost. This entry is only the Egyptian goddess.
