Iona is a small island off the west coast of Scotland, one of the Inner . In the sixth century a monk named Columba came there from Ireland and started a church. From that quiet place, Christian teaching spread through what we now call Scotland. The old stone abbey is still there, and people visit for the history and the calm. In the twentieth century a Christian group called the Iona Community made a home on the island as well; they work across different churches, not only one. The name is usually said “eye-OH-nuh.” Some parents also use Iona as a girl’s name, taken from the island.
